Progression of Phonics

Progression of Phonics, reading and writing from Reception to Key Stage One

Phonics is taught for half an hour a day in Reception and Year 1, and for 15 minutes a day in Year 2. We follow Letters and Sounds Phonics Programme published by the DFES. Phonics is also integrated into weekly English plans. Sessions are progressive and each one is taught using the following method:

• Revisit/review of known sounds for reading and writing and of key words for reading and spelling.
• Teach new graphemes and new tricky words for reading and writing.
• Practise blending and reading words with the new grapheme/phoneme correspondence and they will practise segmenting and spelling words with the new grapheme/phoneme correspondence.
• Apply by reading or writing a sentence using one or more high frequency words and words containing new graphemes.
